I wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t getting into UConn or other good schools with such low scores.<\/p>\n<p>Crying, I asked my English teacher what could be wrong. He handed me a 1-page document similar to this one and told me, &#8220;It&#8217;s easy to explain. Your mother and father aren&#8217;t clergy, they&#8217;re not law and they&#8217;re not medical. You never heard latin prefixes and suffixes around the house; so you are at a disadvantage behind other students who are children of doctors, lawyers, ministers and rabbis.<\/p>\n<p>I memorized all of these and the second time I took the SAT&#8217;s I increased my score by more than 100 points and got accepted to UConn.<\/p>\n<p>I now hold UConn degrees in Literature and Native American Studies. \u00c2\u00a0Thank you Mr. _____ at Fitch Senior High School! Thank you, thank you thank you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">OK, so here go some of the most common SAT prefixes:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>pre &#8211; before (hence pre-fix is a word that comes before)<\/p>\n<p>super &#8211; very or over (super-impose means to impose over)<\/p>\n<p>dis &#8211; not (dismembered means not membered or not together)<\/p>\n<p>uni &#8211; one (unicameral means one house)<\/p>\n<p>a &#8211; not (atypical means not typical)<\/p>\n<p>ex &#8211; out (exhale means breathe out)<\/p>\n<p>in &#8211; in (inhale means breathe in)<\/p>\n<p>neo &#8211; new (neoconservative means new conservative)<\/p>\n<p>post &#8211; after (postmodernism means after modernism)<\/p>\n<p>circum &#8211; around (circumvent the world means travel around the world)<\/p>\n<p>ben &#8211; good (benevolent, beneficial, benefactor, etc. all carry positive charge)<\/p>\n<p>mal &#8211; bad (malevolent, malnutrition, malice)<\/p>\n<p>re &#8211; again (to review is to view again)<\/p>\n<p>gen &#8211; birth (genealogy is study of family history)<\/p>\n<p>chron &#8211; time (chronology is study of time sequence)<\/p>\n<p>poly &#8211; many (polyunsaturated means many not saturated)<\/p>\n<p>intra &#8211; within (intraspecies means within one species)<\/p>\n<p>inter &#8211; between (interspecies means between different species)<\/p>\n<p>ante &#8211; before (antebellum means before a war)<\/p>\n<p>hypo &#8211; too little (hypothermia means too low of body temperature)<\/p>\n<p>hyper &#8211; too much (hyperactive means too active)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>some common SAT suffixes that you should be aware of as well:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; ble: able or capable (doable, corruptible, edible)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; ous: full of (porous means full of pores, or in other words, easily transpired through)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; ant: full of (elegant means full of elegance)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; ose: full of (grandiose means full of grandeur, grand-ness)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; fy: to make like the prefix (magnify means make larger, terrify means to make scared)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; ate: to make like the prefix (procrastinate means to make a longer time)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; ile: tending to (puerile means tending to childish-ness)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; ism: belief (racism, sexism, nationalism, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; tude: condition of (magnitude means the quantity of magnification)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sincerely,<\/p>\n<p>marco frucht<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[ref]=[\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.proprofs.com\/mwiki\/index.php\/Prefixes_and_Suffixes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/www.proprofs.com\/mwiki\/index.php\/Prefixes_and_Suffixes<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was getting straight A&#8217;s in Language Arts going into my Junior Year.
