I LOVE My Hat!

I’m wearing my White House Communication Agency hat again today.

I have to remember not to wear it in the rain though because I’ll probably only get another few months out of this thing before it’s too tattered. And you know I’ll never get access to another one anytime soon, eh?

So this young sailor walks past me where I’m telecommunicating at my laptop and drinking coffee and he does a quick turnaround and I can tell right away he’s going to ask me something.

I thought it was going to be about my http://www.blackfire.net bumpersticker on the laptop. Or perhaps my Richard Stallman GNU bumpersticker in the same place (one guy pointed at that once and said, you know? Richard Stallman DOES kind of look like a Yak doesn’t he?)

But no, he goes, does that hat say “the white house?”

“Yeah.” I tip my head down a little so he can read the rest more clearly. He looked at how else I’m dressed and I can tell he was making another one of those broad generalizations where I can’t possibly have ever worked for the White House press corps, right?

etc.

So there’s where I got to tell the first part of my favorite joke these days.

“Yes,” I said, “after signal corps I joined the team that had to acquire new ‘W’s” for all the keyboards and install and troubleshoot them.”

I let him off easy though. Right away there I told him I actually didn’t get to work directly for the White House ever, just all over DC as a freelancer, etc.

Usually if someone still believes me I go on to tell them that I was the one who had to assess security when Baby Bush insisted on moving his email computers OFF Solaris/Apache/PINE/LYNX and onto PC/XPPro/Outlook/Explorer.

And if someone still doesn’t realize I’m joking I go on to tell them that even though I’m neither Republican nor Democrat, I had to quit my job AND the republican party when I walked in on Bush, Mark Foley, Jeff Gannon and Ted Haggard doing the nasty.

DIY: Make Your Own Toothpaste

A cyberfriend of mine, Serina, decided to do some digging and see what it actually takes to make your own toothpaste. It turns out it only requires a few natural and easy to find ingredients. I don’t have kids yet, but this seems like one of those projects that may be good to get your kids involved with.

I know I never wanted to brush my teeth when I was 5, but this might have made it more fun!
Ingredients needed to make natural toothpaste

1.
Baking soda (works as a natural cleansing agent and it polishes and whitens your teeth as well!)
2.
Table salt
3.
Hydrogen Peroxide (naturally disinfects your mouth)
4.
Stevia (optional as sweetener)
5.
Peppermint oil (optional)

Both 4 and 5 can be found at a health food store

Steps to make your toothpaste

1.
Pour 1/2 cup baking soda into a mixing bowl
2.
Add a dash of salt
3.
Add 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide
4.
Add 1 drop of peppermint oil
5.
Add a dash of stevia (more if you want it sweeter)
6. Mix it all up until it becomes paste like. You may have to add more hydrogen peroxide to get the right consistency.

A few notes about the homemade toothpaste

* You can store it in a plastic container to keep it from drying out.

* If you’re not into the peppermint flavor, you could try ground cinnamon or vanilla extract.

Huge favor; could someone help me identify a basket?

Weavers, Any idea where this basket might be from?

Please help me identify him/her if you can. OK? I’m finding out that it *might* be ash splint or it might be bamboo. And I’m told so far that if it’s North America it might be Cherokee, but I’m also hearing it might be northern New England.

Some are saying the star might be Apache, and others are saying it’s 6 pointed so must be jewish. I’ve tried comparing it with pictures from all over the world but am having no real luck so far.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks a gazillion,
marco

PS: While searching so much; I found a neat “basket” version of the Concentration game, if anyone’s interested; I found it VERY fun!

Is it me, or is Firefox 3 sucking?

Do you have a computer that’s older than, say oh, I dunno, about 5 weeks old?

Are you noticing Firefox grinding your entire system to a crawl?

You might try what I did. And I don’t enjoy saying this because I love Firefox. No, I mean I really love firefox. I even have a daypack with a huge orange logo to prove it. Yes, I rolled back to version 2 because version 3 only seems to work with the newest of new boxes.

For instance, I can run it on my newest desktop just fine. Yes, the one I downgraded from Vista to XP; but that’s a whole other story I’ll tell some day. But my older desktop? My laptop? My phone? Nope. None of them will run ver 3 very well at all! And with my laptop it was the worst.

Bootup took forever whether I was trying to get into the browser right away or not.
The browser got an error almost every time I opened more than 3 or 4 tabs, and often times it would just hang. Completely. Taskbar and nuking it, was the only remedy sometimes. So after much other heartache and troubleshooting, I was able to determine most of my problems.

Firefox 3.0 will use up all of your RAM no matter how much you’ve got. There *might* be a setting you can calm this down from, but I never found it.

Til 3.9ish or 4.1ish I’m sticking with Firefox2, ok? There, I said it. Sorry to let you all know, but you might wanna look over your stuff too. Maybe you’d benefit a rollback as well.

some good instructive emergency info for the NOLA area

My friend Patrick lives some number of miles due north of where Katrina and Rita was so devastating.

His wife and son and he volunteered right there in the parishes during the aftermath. Here’s some really good advice he’s sharing around the interwebs:

Ok, we all know about Gustav heading this way.

Now would be a good time to make contact with your friends and family along the coast. If they’re there, encourage them to evacuate.
If they (or you) do, keep this in mind:

Set up arrangements to stay somewhere until everything settles down.

Carry enough cash for food, lodging and gas. Be careful: the closer to the coast, the likelihood of finding gas decreases. Don’t get caught on “E” at a station that ran out of gas a few minutes before. Also, ATM’s may not work.

Carry a few blankets and gallon jugs of water with you. Also, carry food that won’t spoil easily; you may not be able to stop for food along the way.

Toilet supplies and meds (bring the bottle with the label from the pharmacy; if you run out, it will be easier to get refills) Also, if nature calls while on the road, carry at least one roll of toilet paper with you. That way, you’ll ALWAYS have at least one roll with you, even if the “facilities” do not.

Important papers (marriage license, birth certificate, insurance policies, deeds, etc.) Put them in a place only you know about. You may need them. And, you don’t want them to come up damaged or missing.

Portable radio with extra batteries. If you’re close to NOLA, you can pick up WWL-AM easily (870 AM) but at night you can pick it up pretty much anywhere. During Katrina, they were basically a lifeline between NOLA and the rest of the world, and probably will be now as well. Their info is basically real-time (even better than CNN or FNC) and the on-air staff know the area well.

Check about contraflow. Contraflow is using interstate highways to evacuate. a certain area. In short, all traffic goes in one way for a specified length of highway. So far, sections of I-55 and I-59 near the MS/LA line are used for contraflow. MHP and MDOT will mark the sections clearly. If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask.
You certainly don’t want to be the only northbound driver on a southbound piece of interstate!

No Longer A Fan Of Richard Cheese

I used to think Richard Cheese was a hoot.

I told lots of friends about him.

What he lacked in creativity he made up for in humor.

He must be out of material because now he’s started assaulting his fans. Both verbally and physically. Something tells me he’s having personal problems. And his handlers are cleaning up after him maybe.

So not even an hour ago there was a video of him grabbing a camcorder out of someone’s hands, and then throwing it at him, and when he realized someone else got his assault on camera he tried spitting half a drink all over him. Dozens got him on camera doing this because he was onstage in a “New Media” conference and no one was told they WEREN’T allowed to film.

Now he’s going after every single person who publishes about his tantrum at places like Youtube so he can force them to take down their journalism. Fascist bastard!

As I look back I think about one thing. I’m really glad that the only CDs of his I ever purchased were about ten cents on the dollar at Tower Records’ going out of business sale two Christmas’s ago!

Fox Unethical Again Handling The Miley Cyrus Hack.

Filed under: Mundane Or Sublime,News,Tech — admin @ 6:54 pm

So, just when you think Fox sNooze has stooped to the lowest low they can go:

..they drop even deeper in it.

This time they’ve disrespected some hackerkids bigtime.

Follow this:

On July 12, 2008, a hacker known by the pseudonym TrainReq posted several racy photographs of Miley on the website Digital Gangster. TrainReq claimed he obtained the photos from Cyrus’ camera phone.[52] On July 14, 2008, FOX News aired the story, claiming that the photographs had been leaked by an “anonymous” source. [53] Soon after the story was aired, a discovery was made that FOX News had displayed images which had been clearly altered to remove the original watermarks left by TrainReq. [54]

(No, I’m not going to post the pix in here. (With OR without watermarks!))

Bad News Good News. People Are Stealing My Songs

Bad news good news.

Someone out there is giving away mp3s of my music,
and then using them to tease people into joining a ringtone
subscription service.

http://beemp3.com/index.php?q=marco+capelli&st=artist

Is that the bad news or the good news?

Both.

Listen,
these are all songs I’ve given away completely all over the internet
wanting people to hear them pro bono!

Please explore whether you can convert an mp3 to a ringtone at
no charge to yourself on the particular phone you have.

Please only purchase a ringtone of my music if there is NO OTHER
POSSIBLE WAY TO GET IT FREE.

My music was not made to be bought and sold!

It was made to be shared, loved, cuddled with, given away, felt, heard
and understood on levels that money can NEVER translate or interpret.

Oh well, so this is good news and bad news. I’m a little frustrated that
there’s someone out there trying to monetize, but I’m ecstatic that every
single one of these are available FREE OF CHARGE somewhere else.

Please find the free ones, you’ll feel much better about that.

So anyhew, here’s a couple places to find them FREE:

google:   mp3notcom   (all one word)

Or just wander around here a little while:
