When Does A Usenet Reply Become An Essay:

(Another Accidental Guitar Lesson)

by marco frucht

You caught me. It was me all along.

I invented tapping in the middle 1700’s when I was in Paris picking up chicks. There was something majikal about playing the guitar back then. You ended up with scores of wives. I mean before weddings even. They were all willing to call themselves your wife with no strings attached. Imagine a wife in every town taking care of your children with no commitment save for an occasional waltz or sarabande. All you had to do was send a buck or two once in a while or maybe a manuscript to show some progress, and of course you must tell them when you’ll be there performing next; if even a year later!

Oy!

I felt like Mischy Barishokov, I had so many wives. And none of them were formal weddings. So no paternity suits! And all because I could tap. We called it “tokarring” back then.

It was my 35th wife, Elena Sanz, who coined the phrase “tapping.”

“My husband can tap like a racehorse,” she was heard saying. And then I was challenged by guitarists all over France, Spain and also Honduras for some strange reason. It wasn’t until I got to Chiapas, in the late 1800’s before I knew that people had been tapping since long before me. Chiapanecas can tap your socks off. I believe Charo was the best at it, even if she wasn’t the first.

Oh, April 1, 1894, I remember that date well. Charo and me tapping by the moonlight until 4 am, maybe 5. But then her father came by with a huge musket and called me a “dirty Castillian tapper” and told me if I didn’t stay away from Charo he’d have my P, I, M AND my A cut off.

Last I knew Charo was married to a cabinetmaker and recorded a dozen or so albums herself. All her children know how to tap. Actually it comes naturally to them.

Tapping was a lost art until the 1960’s. Before that I thought for sure, I was the only one still doing it. Then suddenly Andres Segovia added tapping to his repertoire. And next thing you know, going into his 70’s Segovia’s got newborn babies singing his praises in NY, Boston, Paris, and Honduras just like me. Oh, Andres, Viagra’s got nothing on you, babe.

Everyone knows the story of how Eddie Van Halen learned to tap. He found out about it in a musty old issue of Playboy behind the orange barn in Santa Cruz, CA on a hot september day in 1970. The thirteen year old was reading an interview I gave to George Plimpton where I basically described tapping in full detail.

“You put your pinky here…”

The story was called “Making Her Sing,” but I swear I had nothing to do with the titling. Probably Plimpton’s sick sense of humour.

Eddie (EVH became his nickname, or Vertical Hold for short) couldn’t wait to try it himself. He was doing it in front of television one day and saw a flamenco star named Bertilucci Valderon tapping her little butt off on one of those Brady Bunch type shows and he just knew he had to tap with her.

“Get me Valderon,” he told his agent on the phone. The agent called her, but she wouldn’t return the calls for days. So vertical hold Halen took matters into his own hands. He hopped into his maserati and found out where she’d be driving her mustang. He came to a stop light and speeding up next to her, he tapped into her.

The rest is history. They have 72 children, almost all of them of tapping age, and Eddie gives an occasional tapping lesson at one of the local guitar shops; where he still furthers the myth that he invented the techique of tapping.

Nah, I don’t say anything, because I know who started it.

And besides, who else has to know besides you and me? Oh and my wives.

Tapped In Wisconsin,

FREE GUITAR LESSON: Supplemental Notes About The A-String Pages Of The Mel Bay Book

Notes about pages 18-21 from the Mel Bay Grade 1 book.

A free lesson from Marco Frucht:

Not to be too much the complainer; but all four songs in the Mel Bay book work you out on the A string’s ‘C’ note but not the ‘B’ and ‘A’ notes even once.

I’m afraid this might be an oversight that has gone unnoticed by teachers all over the world for something like 65 years now!

I’ve written an Etude in Am that includes all three of those notes as well as everything on the four higher notes that a student has already mastered and worked out on inside of the Mel Bay book, so the learner won’t develop too many bad habits before moving on to the 6th string.

I’ll put up an mp3 of how I play it, for any who wish to work out with it.

I’ve made Standard Notation of the first two passages so far, and as soon as I’ve done two or three more, I’ll put up a youtube with the same audio and a page of notation to refer to so you can play along fairly easily.

UPDATE:  Here’s the Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75SwKORBauE

I might propose that this be added to any next edition of this book that has dominated the guitar learning world since 1947.

Sincerely,

Marco Capelli Frucht

OK, those quotes are unrelated to what I’m about to blog but I just found those very profound just minutes ago so I had to include them here.

So, I spell a special ed teacher about once a week for an hour and a half or so; and it’s this one middle schooler named ___ who has full-on autism, downs, and many other issues so he’s very low functioning. Essentially I just babysit him while he watches his favorite cartoons on VHS and he has a button that can start it or stop it and that’s it. He loves to stop it and laugh — then start it again, and watch some more, “rinse, repeat,” etc.

Every once in a while though, something most people don’t ever notice OR care about — he’ll grab my hand or arm really lightly to get my attention and then touch his nose, his teeth his ear or his foot, etc., and he’s willing to wait almost forever until I say what he just pointed to, and the moment I say it he laughs hysterically and grins from ear to ear and either points to something else to continue or goes back to clicking his videos.

A friend who works full-time with special ed issues just blogged that a kid just gave her a noogie which made me giggle so much I had to pen these thoughts immediately.

It really is the little things, huh?

Woah, I Guess “Frybread’s” Gonna Get Out There and Impact So Many People!

The other day I saw a friend in a coffee shop and related a moment when I went out in the hallway as a substitute teacher and a schoolkid yelled “mr marco,” smiled and waved and then began singing slightly altered lyrics to my song “frybread,” something like “nana… nana… make me some frybread, make me some frybread, nana make frybread…  but s/he did it in key and right on to the rhythm and tempo.

He immediately called his toddler who’s the one you can hear offstage in my music video because of her fisherprice fone-on-wheels. He wanted to ask her while I was there what her favorite song was. He said there was too good of a chance she’ll say it’s “Frybread” because he’s heard her sing it all the time. Well she listed two songs as her all-time favorites. Uncle Kracker’s “Smile” and my “Frybread.”

I’m grateful, thankful, embarrassed, awkward, humbled, and elated each and every time someone responds like this to my humble little 3-chord song written in C with the simplest most honest lyrics about a relationship between a 4-year-old Navajo girl and her great grandmother. I really don’t know how to express all those feelings in words really.

I did want to mention this though as a follow-up to that first story I’ve been relating all week because this kind of stuff just keeps happening.

Here’s the post I’d put up about that earlier event:
OK nothing more thrilling this life than having someone about 3 feet tall who you haven’t seen in more than a month recognize you in the hallway, wave say hi and smilingly, sing a couple lines from the chorus of a song you wrote!

Sacred Cows make the tastiest hamburger…

For those of you who think John Lennon would roll over in his grave because of Cee Lo Green‘s rendition of “Imagine,” I’ve got one Abbie Hoffman quote for you:

Sacred cows make the tastiest hamburger.

I’ll bet Lennon is laughing at/with all of us.

The lyric change is at about 5:01 mins.

Hear for yourself, and as a professional folksinger I simply say if you can’t handle parody, this says more about you than Cee Lo or John.

K thx bye.

Try this great recipe for Marco’s Sweet Tanka Chili

Marco Frucht of Connecticut is a poet, songwriter, folksinger and classical guitarist who is a big fan of Tanka Bar. He participated in early test marketing for our products. You can hear his music on his Reverbnation page.

Marco has concocted a chili recipe of his own design which we have dubbed “Marco’s Sweet Tanka Chili.” Sounds perfect for a cold, winter night.

4 T. olive oil *
1 white onion, finely chopped
1 T. paprika
2 large red peppers
1 bell pepper
4 garlic cloves, chop finely
1 bag Tanka Bites, cutting some of them just a little tinier than they
already are.

Saute these first ingredients (in order of appearance) in a frying pan.

IN A LARGE CROCK POT OR SLOW COOKER

4 more T. of olive oil
1 can tomato paste
2 cups water
2 small slices of fresh ginger, chop fine
2 t. ground cumin
1 t. cayenne *
1 jalapeno *
1/2 sweet potato chopped fine *
1/2 sweet potato solid (for cutting down on saltiness)
2 cans organic black beans *
1 bay leaf

Bring water to a rolling boil, add tomato paste, change heat to medium, add
all the sauteed ingredients, then add everything else. change heat to
simmer.

*Extra virgin cold press oil if possible. If you’re cooking for children go easier on the hot stuff. I’ve soaked and boiled dry beans but it doesn’t add a huge flavor or texture difference for this recipe.

  • Cut the sweet potato in half and dice up the other half to add in to pot.

  • Simmer the solid half in the pot the whole time; remove it along with the bay leaf about 10 minutes before serving. This takes away the saltiness from the tomato paste can and the dried cranberries that are already part of the Tanka Bites.

  • If you like it much thicker you can use one more bag of Tanka Bites or you could keep mixing in some commercial chili powder each time you stir until you’re happy with the texture.

  • If you like things extra sweet, you could add 2 small blocks of dark chocolate, 1 cinnamon stick or a teaspoon of local honey.

An artist speaks no matter how shaky his or her voice gets.

    Lives in the Balance (Literally)

Please do not pay anyone besides Jackson Browne, Richie Havens or me for your ability to get this song.

    http://abmp3.com/download/6337274-mp3.html

This is the only place left I’ve found that it’s still free of charge from me.

The internet is beginning to frustrate me. The only two songs I’m selling ANYWHERE currently are my “Chiapaneca” and my “Frybread” as a CD single for 5bucks or less. I’ve seen it for sale for 9 dollars, and I’ve stumbled upon the single downloads for as high as 2 dollars.

I get 64 cents from iTunes and amazon, 70 from CDBaby, 99cents at Digstation.com, a whopping three cents from rhapsody and only a penny from napster. Spotify, who I had so many hopes and aspirations for gives me absolutely nothing two fiscal quarters in row which angers  me greatly.

Also something you should know. Apple WAS giving me 70cents per download until Amazon came in at 64 cents as a win-win for EVERYONE BUT the artist. Why? Because Apple responded by going from 70 down to 64. (I would love to start a class law suit for half the difference at 3 cents and nail the both of them some day, but that’s for another discussion ok?)

Listen, I’m not going to make any real money as an award winning independent songwriter and producer, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to let someone else make real money off of your ability to get free music from me.

Thank you, and have a nice day.

POETICALLY PARENTHETICAL: (Umm, Strike that, reverse it…) Looks like Ron Paul might win Iowa this time around. I have problems with Paul just as I do Obama but if he does take it, I know an awful lot of Democrats and Independents (and a huge amount of angry disenfranchised Veterans) who will flood the polls to vote him in. This may in fact be the Revolution that every facet of our police state has tirelessly derailed and frustrated for the past 20 some odd years now. (perhaps my entire adult life when I look back at Iranscam, S&L and EnronValdez)
